The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has officially named Meli Derenalagi as the captain for the 2024 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
Derenalagi, known for his exceptional skills as a backrower and his leadership both on and off the field, has been a pivotal figure for the Fijian Drua since its establishment.
Having captained the team in the last season, Derenalagi brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to lead a successful rugby campaign.
Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Head Coach Mick Byrne expressed his confidence in Derenalagi’s abilities, stating, “Meli is no stranger to the role, and we look forward to seeing him take on the challenge once again.”
Derenalagi’s leadership qualities have been evident throughout his career, both internationally and domestically.
A member of the 2020 Olympic Gold Medal-winning Fiji 7s team, he has also represented Fiji in the Rugby World Cup and has been a standout performer for the Drua since his debut in 2022.
Acknowledging the support of his teammates, Derenalagi emphasised the importance of teamwork in achieving success.
“I am honoured to lead the Drua once again and am grateful for the support of my fellow players and coaching staff. Together, we are determined to make this season a memorable one for our fans,” he said.
Derenalagi’s appointment comes ahead of the Drua’s trial match against the ACT Brumbies in Canberra this Saturday, where he will lead his team onto the field for the first time in his new role as captain.
With seven crucial home games lined up in Fiji, the stage is set for Derenalagi and his team to showcase their talent and make their mark in the Super Rugby Pacific competition.
