Fiji’s evolving national art gallery has taken a major step forward with the unveiling of its name: Na iTukuni National Art Gallery.
The name, meaning “the storyteller” in iTaukei, reflects the gallery’s mission to celebrate and share the stories of Fiji through the power of art.
The name was chosen by a national taskforce following months of consultation and planning. It symbolises the central role the gallery will play as a platform for preserving, presenting, and evolving Fijian narratives both traditional and contemporary.
The gallery will be located in the old St Stephen’s building, which is now ready for restoration. Work will soon begin to turn it into a lively cultural centre that connects Fiji’s history with its artistic future. It has already begun hosting art shows and events in its current form.
