Cruise tourism returns to Yasawa i Rara

By Ema Ganivatu

On the northern edge of Fiji’s Yasawa Group, the quiet island of Yasawa-i-Rara is coming alive to the rhythm of visiting cruise ships—bringing travellers and renewed economic opportunity.

The recent arrival of the Seabourn Pursuit, its third visit to the island, signals the return of cruise tourism to this remote destination.

After more than a decade without cruise calls, Yasawa-i-Rara is re-emerging as a unique stop for travellers seeking authentic cultural experiences far from the usual tourist trail.

This revival has been made possible through improved maritime access, including updated nautical charts developed by the Fiji Navy’s Fiji Hydrographic Service and Transam Fiji Limited, alongside support from Australia’s Market Development Facility.

Behind the scenes, the iTaukei Trust Fund Board has also worked closely with the community to ensure they are prepared to welcome visitors.

When the ship anchored offshore this past weekend, the village transforms.

More than 180 guests are greeted with warm smiles, traditional welcomes, and a range of experiences providing insights into island life—from guided village tours to handcrafted souvenirs and freshly prepared local cuisine.

For visitors, it’s an opportunity to step into a way of life shaped by tradition, community, and connection to the land. For the people of Yasawa-i-Rara, it’s a vital source of income.

Cruise tourism in the village came to a halt in 2008, and made its return in 2024. Since then, it has begun to reshape livelihoods, with families benefiting from new income streams and visible improvements across the village.

Community members say preparations for each visit are a collective effort. Days in advance, roles are assigned—men, women, and youths each contributing to ensure every guest enjoys a safe and memorable experience.

Beyond the economic benefits, the return of cruise tourism has strengthened community spirit. Villagers come together with a shared purpose, setting aside daily routines to prepare for arrivals—reinforcing unity while proudly showcasing their culture.

As cruise ships continue to chart their course back to these remote shores, Yasawa-i-Rara stands ready to welcome the world.
