Chris Cole Architect firm has been honored with the main award at the 2024 Fiji Architects Association Awards, held in Suva last week.
This accolade was awarded to Vuda House, which was building using the Pak Shak design, a prefabricated system tailored specifically for the tropical environment.
The Pak Shak design addresses the practical needs of living in a tropical environment, while contributing to a larger discourse on sustainable and resilient architecture, particularly in remote locations.
Deputy Prime Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, presented the main award to Principal Chris Cole, highlighting the crucial role architects play in shaping the future of Fiji.
“Architecture is more than creating spaces. It is about crafting an environment that enhances our quality of life, safeguards our communities, and reflects on our aspirations,” he said.
Prasad also spoke about the role of architects in promoting social equity and inclusivity and the importance of preserving Fiji’s cultural heritage while designing innovative and eco-friendly solutions for the tourism industry.
On receiving the award, Chris Cole said, “It is great to see the architectural profession acknowledged and encouraged in the Pacific, where many other challenges often take precedence. In more remote parts of the world, it is hard to make an impact, but working in small ways can contribute to something bigger. This is what I am trying to do with Pak Shak. I’m proud to have done this work in Fiji and to have been recognised by my peers.”
Vuda House also received the top award in the new residential category.
Chris Cole Architect is currently working in collaboration with WOOF Design, London on a major resort refurbishment in Fiji.
