Na Cagi Ni Veisau

Fiji Museum, Suva

Na Cagi NI Veisau marks the 10-year anniversary of The Veiqia Project, a collective of Fijian women dedicated to the revitalisation of veiqia, the traditional Fijian female tattooing practice.

At the centre of the exhibition is the liku, a traditional fibre skirt that once played a key role in marking important life stages like puberty, marriage, and motherhood.

Featuring newly commissioned works by twelve Fijian artisans and artists from Fiji, Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, Na Cagi Ni Veisau honours significant life stages of Fijian women: from first menstruation and tattoo marking, to marriage, motherhood, and elderhood. The exhibition brings together traditional and contemporary materials to celebrate cultural resilience and the quiet—and not-so-quiet—power of Fijian women.

Artists include: Ananaia Luvuiwasawasa, Donita Vatuinaruku Hulme, Dulcie Stewart, Joana Monolagi, Joana Sekinairai Veitala and Amelia Kaukiono, Luisa Keteiyau Tora, Lusia Managreve,  Margaret Aull, Mere Rasue, Sikiti Waqabaca, and Yasbelle Kerkow.

Na Cagi Ni Veisau is respectfully led by a curatorium comprising members of The Veiqia Project: Joana Monolagi, Dulcie Stewart, Yasbelle Kerkow, Margaret Aull, Donita Vatuinaruku Hulme, Luisa Keteiyau Tora, and Dr Tarisi Vunidilo.
