Fiji’s national museum is hosting a scavenger hunt to locate the ‘Wasekaseka’ on Sunday, October 20, 2024.
‘Wasekaseka’ (or split-tooth necklaces) became widespread in the mid-1800s in Fiji. They were made for chiefs by Tongan canoe craftsmen, or by local canoe builders of Tongan and Samoan descent, likely in response to the introduction of metal tools and to an increase of sperm whale teeth brought in by traders. This necklace is also the main visual component of the Fiji Museum’s current branding.
All local residents will be offered half-price for admission fees.
