In a vibrant display of talent and creativity, MATA Dance Crew, a creative dance company based in Suva, is gearing up to captivate audiences at the Fiji Fringe Festival on March 23, 2024.
Founded by Tevita Tobeyaweni in 2019, MATA Dance has become a trailblazer in the Fiji dance scene, aiming to establish hip hop as a prominent and celebrated art form.
Tevita, shared insights into the journey of the company and the creative process that fuels their performances.
Speaking to Fiji Traveller, Tevita shared the inspiration behind forming MATA, Tevita expressed, “I really wanted to create a movement of hip- hop dance in Fiji,” he said.
“That involves us being able to put a team together that was passionate about establishing that scene here.”
MATA Dance crew, consisting of 25 dancers aged 17 to 26, has overcome challenges, including navigating through the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic during its second year of operation.
Tevita acknowledged the importance of collaboration within the group, emphasizing, “A lot of the work that we do is very collaborative. It’s not often one person in terms of what is produced by the dancers and the dance company.”
Highlighting the creative process, Tevita shared that the choreographies are often collaborative efforts, encouraging dancers to step out of their comfort zones and contribute to the artistic vision.
The group’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity is evident, drawing inspiration from the varied cultures, traditions, and experiences of its members.
As MATA Dance crew prepares for its performance at the Fiji Fringe Festival, Tevita teased a departure from their usual energetic routines, stating that the group aims to present a storytelling approach, inviting the audience to connect with the narrative woven into their mesmerizing routines.
“You can expect a very different style of how we’re going to execute the performances this year,” said Tevita.
He also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase their passion on a global stage, saying, “Any opportunity that we get to showcase what we are passionate about adds to the movement and establishes it.”
He emphasized the importance of platforms like the Fiji Fringe Festival in contributing to the growth and understanding of the dance community.
In addition to the Fiji Fringe Festival, MATA Dance Group is eagerly anticipating hosting their show “Rep the Hood” and participating in Dance Fest Fiji, continuing their mission to spread the love of hip -hop dance in Fiji.
Aspiring dancers were encouraged by Tevita to pursue their dreams while acknowledging the hard work and dedication required.
“You need to be able to put in the work in order to see your work come to fruition,” he said.
