Fiji visitor arrival numbers for December surpassed pre-COVID levels according to figures released by the Bureau of Statistics this week.

A total of 75,580 visitors (102% of 2019) landed in Fiji last month.

December also recorded the highest ever number of Australian travellers in a month, with 42,304 coming to Fiji, exceeding September 2022 which was the previous record.

Compared to 2019, travellers from Australia were up 121%, NZ 106%, US 97%, Canada 135% and UK 71%. The lift in numbers from the US. is especially significant as this market is a key focus for both Tourism Fiji and Fiji Airways, with the opening of the new Vancouver direct flights.

The total arrivals for 2022 were 636,312 (71% of 2019’s total figures), a significant result and growth over the year, considering only 11K tourists were recorded as arriving in February 2022.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka said the achievement in reaching 2022 visitor arrivals targets was outstanding and noteworthy.

“I’m grateful to our people from the arrival concourse to hotels to restaurants to grassroots communities for their dedication in promoting Fiji and the Fijian culture. Everyone has a part to play in our success. The best of travel and tourism isn’t behind us – it’s ahead of us,” he said.

Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill reiterated, “I’m also really pleased to see NZ, US and Canada numbers all so strong, which is a testament to the continued hard work of our industry. 2023 is looking really solid with the opening of China and Japan, and direct flights via Fiji Airways opening in April. It’s been a wonderful 12 months for our industry, who should feel really proud of these numbers.”
