TEDxNadi: Be a force for good

Akshay Singh

What more can be done and what can we do better? These were the questions posed by Akshay Singh, during his Ted talk in Nadi last February.

Originally from New Delhi, India, Singh has played a key role in advancing sustainable tourism throughout the Pacific – in the Cook Islands, PNG and Fiji.

“My greatest fear is that in my lifetime, the oceans, rivers and land in the South Pacific will end up looking like it is in India. What will happen to us then?

To avoid that, Singh has been part of a few initiatives in his capacity as Area Director of Sales and Marketing at IHG Hotels & Resorts.

“In my career in the tourism industry, I had the power to be a force for good,” he said.

“We’ve banned plastic straws and single-use plastics, gotten rid of those tiny bottles of shampoo and conditioners and bath soap and replaced them with bulk amenities.

“And we’ve donated thousands of dollars to Fiji Cancer Society. This is what every tourism business in the South Pacific should be doing,” he emphasised.
